Nordic Language Technology Visit to Tallinn

Local host and contacts

Institute of the Estonian Language

The main research fields are:

  • computational representation of Estonian grammar: rule- based morphology, grammatical information in dictionaries;
  • representation of the lexical-semantic system of Estonian: organisation of lexicon, structural mark-up, formal metalanguage for dictionaries;
  • phonetics and phonology: Estonian prosody modelling, connections of syntactic and prosodic features.

LT Unit works in close collaboration with all departments of the Institute in creating language resources: formal grammars, electronic versions of traditional dictionaries, on-line lexicons and databases: the English-Estonian Dictionary for automatic translation, linguistic information database, diphone database for the text-to-speech synthesis, etc. LT Unit has created various software for language technology. Most programmes are distributed as freeware to promote language technology in Estonian. LT Unit coordinates the Estonian language portal KeeleWeb http://ee.www.ee/ which integrates language resources and language software in one environment. At November 1, 2004 we will start (together with our partners) a new Internet environment Keelevara (http://www.keelevara.ee), which is a professional multi-language electronic dictionary that includes advanced language sensitive search options. LT Unit has participated in the EU projects (GLOSSER, CONCEDE, etc.) and in common state financed programme of language technology together with the University of Tartu, and Tallinn Technical University.
