What I am doing at present

• From February 2010 I have been a (junior) project researcher or an IT systems specialist in the FIN-CLARIN project, the Finnish part of CLARIN (Common Language Resources and Technology Infrastructure), and from February 2011 partly also in the META-NORD EU project.

What I have done in the past

A couple of picks:

• From January 2006 to December 2009 I was a full-time graduate (PhD) student in the Graduate School of Language Technology in Finland. The subject of my thesis is Modelling and reasoning with the semantics of temporal expressions using finite-state methods. The thesis is still in progress.
• In 2005 (and unofficially also in 2006) I worked in a language technology project called 4M (Mobile and Multilingual Maintenance Man) at the Department of General Linguistics of the University of Helsinki.
• In December 2004 I finally (after eleven and a half years at the university) graduated and got a Master of Arts degree in language technology (formerly computational linguistics) at the Department of General Linguistics of the University of Helsinki. In my degree I had computer science as a large minor subject, and mathematics and English philology as smaller minor subjects. The title of my Master‘s thesis was (freely translated from Finnish) Semantics and generation of calendar expressions: Modelling their semantics as extended regular expressions and generating the corresponding natural language expressions using XSLT.
• In December 2001 I got a Bachelor of Arts degree in language technology.
• From May 1998 to November 2000 I worked in a European Union research and technological development project called MIETTA (Multilingual Information Extraction for Tourism and Travel Assistance), in which the Department of General Linguistics participated.
• From September 1997 to April 1998 I worked as a research assistant in the SID project (Strucutred and Intelligent Documents) at the Department of Computer Science.
• During the academic years 1994–97 I worked as a part-time Unix users‘ advisor at the Department of General Linguistics.
• In autumn 1996 and autumn 1997 I taught the course Lingvistisen atk:n perusteet (Introduction to Linguistic Computing) at our department.

On my Finnish home page I have more information about myself. I still intend to translate more of it into English, too, but it has remained an intention for a number of years, so don‘t hold your breath…
