Udmurtia - Izhevsk

Udmurtia is a republic situated in eastern European Russia, bordering on the republic of Bashkortostan to the southeast and the republic of Tatarstan to the southwest. Udmurtia is one of the 21 Russian republics, which are the administrative units within the Russian Federation.

Udmurtia covers a total area of 42,100 sq km (16,300 sq mi) similar to Holland. The republic lies on a hilly plain that descends from the Upper Kama Upland (with elevations up to 330 m/1100 ft) and the foothills of the Ural Mountains in the north to lower lands in the south and swampy lowlands in the west. Udmurtia has a mildly continental climate.

Udmurtia has a population of about 1,640,700. The population of Izhevsk, the administrative center, is about 700,000. About 70 percent of the republic’s inhabitants live in urban areas. Russians represent some 60 percent of the population inhabitants. Udmurts constitute 30 percent. Smaller groups make up the remainder. Udmurts speak Udmurt, a language that belongs to the Permic branch of the Finno-Ugric languages. It has two major dialects and uses a Cyrillic alphabet.

For many years the "Italmas" ensemble of Song and Dance, the theatre of Folk Song "Aikai", the folk ensemble of Song and Dance "Tanok" are very popular and have had great success both within the country and abroad. The people of the republic are proud of the fact that the great Russian composer Pyotr Chaikovsky was born in Udmurtia in the small town of Votkinsk. The house, where he was born and lived for 8 years is a museum now. It is a unique architectural memorial. The other person that has brought great fame to the republic is Mikhail Kalashnikov, a well-known gunsmith and designer of the submachine-gun AKM. The Museum devoted to his life and work is currently being built. Other museums include the National Museum in the Open Air and the Armory Museum. The unique samples of the earliest models of arms and the recent designers of arms are presented in the city Armory Museum.

There are also museums, theaters, cinemas, and art galleries where you may enjoy the works of the national artists.

Industry in Udmurtia includes iron & steel industry, oil production, machine and tool manufacturing, electric-power generation, motorcycle manufacturing, and lumbering. Agriculture, which is limited because of poor soil, centers on meat production. Roads, railroads, pipelines, and airlines link the republic to the rest of Russia. The Kama River also serves as a transportation route.

As Udmurtia is located in the north, winter lasts for quite a long time; therefore, it is possible to enjoy winter sports. You may spend your free time skiing, skating and taking part in other activities. Though summer time is the most unique as you will be able to enjoy the beauty of Udmurt nature with its deep forests and springs.
