The three-year (2000-2002) project deals with the following two interwoven areas of speech technology, with Finnish as the focal language: (i) speech synthesis and (ii) speaker recognition. The most intimate conceptual and methodological interface of the present project is to be found in the concurrent development of Finnish speech databases. In the speech synthesis component of the project we aim to develop a flexible, modular text-to-speech system, which would have both applied and research-oriented impact, for instance, a digital daily newspaper with naturalistic Finnish output for the visually handicapped will be among the applied repercussions of the project.
