Dear Participants,

We are looking forward to meeting you all in Mekrijärvi on the 19th of September. This letter contains some up-to-date information about the symposium.

The final program of the symposium is available on our website at

Please note that there will be no special abstract booklet. If you wish to have the abstracts of the presentations on paper, you should print them yourself. They can be found at:

If you have paid the registration fee in advance, please take the receipt with you. If you plan to pay upon arrival, note that we can only accept cash payment. The accommodation fee should be paid directly to the secretary of the Mekrijärvi research station on Friday, 20 September, either in cash or by a credit card.

On Thursday evening we will have an informal get-together with a light supper in Mekrijärvi. On Friday evening, you are welcome to join a short hike in the scenic surroundings of the Mekrijärvi research station. Please take suitable hiking shoes with you! On Saturday evening, you are invited to a traditional Finnish Saturday evening experience, sauna by the lakeside, followed by a light supper and refreshments.

When taking copies of your handouts, please note that the number of participants is around 35; there are no parallel sections.

There is an overhead projector and a blackboard in the lecture room. If you need any other equipment, let us know in advance. Please remember that your presentation should not exceed 20 minutes (+8 minutes for discussion).

On Thursday 19 September, there will be a coach to pick you up from the Joensuu airport at 5 pm. The coach will also stop at Joensuu railway station to collect those of you arriving to Joensuu on the 18:19 train from Helsinki. We will arrive at Mekrijärvi research station at around 19:30.

Please let us know in advance (by an e-mail to your itinerary to Joensuu and back. This is very important, since we need to know your time of arrival to and departure from Joensuu in order to arrange the transportation to Mekrijärvi research station (which cannot easily be reached by public transport).

If you have any questions, please use the address of the organizing committee, as before. The address reaches all the participants of the symposium.

Welcome to Mekrijärvi!

On behalf of the organizers,

Leena Kolehmainen

Ps. The weather in Finland is unpredictable. We have enjoyed an absolutely fabulous, dry and very warm summer. The weather in September, however, is rather unpredictable; it may still be warm, but you should also be prepared for autumn temperatures, rainy days and chilly nights!

For a very detailed daily report on local weather in Mekrijärvi, see (unfortunately only in Finnish, but a lot of the information should be decipherable even without knowledge of Finnish).
