Symposium to be held in Turku, November 18-19, 2004

FIRST CIRCULAR, OCTOBER 15th, 2004

Dear Participant,

We are pleased that you will be participating in the symposium "The
lexicon: its status in the theory of language" organized by the Linguistic
Association of Finland, November 18-19, 2004. The symposium will take
place in Turku in the Humanities building "Arken" of the Åbo Akademi
University (address: Tehtaankatu 2, Turku).

Please note, abstracts will not be published separately as a book. If you wish to have the abstracts of the presentations on paper, we kindly ask you to print them before your arrival.

REGISTRATION AND PARTICIPATION

The deadline for registration has been extended to Friday 12th of November. Register by e-mail to the address lexicon-organizers (at) utu.fi

For those who will be presenting at the conference, in case you have not yet confirmed your participation we kindly ask you to immediately do so by sending an e-mail to the address lexicon-organizers (at) utu.fi. Note that your confirmation simultaneously serves as registration and thus you need not register separately.

Participation fees:

• general: EUR 50
• members of the association: EUR 25
• undergraduate students free

Participants from abroad are requested to pay in cash upon arrival.
Participants from Finland may send the registration fee by giro account no
800013-1424850 to The Linguistic Association of Finland (SKY) / Symposium
or pay in cash upon arrival. If you pay to the account of the association,
please use the code LEXICON, and remember to indicate your name in the payment, so that we know who has paid the registration fee in advance. In addition to this, if you have paid the registration fee in advance, please take the receipt with you. If you plan to pay upon arrival, note that we are unfortunately only able to accept payments in cash.

PROGRAM

The program of the symposium as well as the abstracts for the
section papers are now available at

Participants presenting a paper or a poster are kindly asked to check
their abstracts on the web and let the organizers know if there are any
problems.

PAPERS

Please do remember that your presentation may not exceed 20 minutes (+ 10
min for discussion). We advice the speakers to keep within this time limit. The chairpersons will be strict about the time limits in each session. If you present examples on transparencies or handouts from languages other than English, we ask you to gloss them.

If there is any special equipment you need for your presentation (laptops, video projectors, overhead projector, loudspeakers, etc.) please inform us to the e-mail address above.

Please make copies of the necessary handouts before your arrival.

POSTERS

The posters will be located in the lobby in the Humanities building "Arken." We kindly ask the poster authors to arrive at the symposium site in good time on Thursday morning to hang up their posters. A member of the organizing committee will be present to help you. The size of the boards reserved for the posters is 88 cm x 118 cm (portrait). One board is reserved for one poster. We recommend that the poster authors be available to present their posters and to answer questions during the coffee breaks. In case you want to give out handouts, we kindly ask you to make copies before your arrival. The posters should be removed after the symposium ends at 5 PM on Friday evening.

ACCOMMODATION

The symposium web page contains a link to the City of Turku Tourist Office
and to the web pages of several hotels/hostels in Turku.

The symposium venue, the humanities building Arken, is situated approx. 1.5 kilometers (approx. 0.9 miles) from the Turku city centre.

CONFERENCE DINNER

The conference dinner will be held at Brewery Restaurant Koulu (address: Eerikinkatu 18) on Thursday evening at 7PM.

The dinner is a smorgasbord which includes:

• Three different salads
• Bread and butter

The main course, alternatively either:

• Mango-bacon chicken casserole with rice or
• Pasta with ricotta cheese and spinach, tomato and cream sauce

Dessert:

• Coffee or tea
• Chocolate cake Nemesis, banana sauce and vanilla ice cream

The conference dinner costs approx. €25 / person (drinks not included).
