Symposium to be held in Helsinki, August 24-26, 2005
* * * Second Circular, August 12, 2005 * * *
Dear Participants,
We are looking forward to meeting you all in Helsinki on the 24th
of
August. This letter contains some up-to-date information about the
symposium.
PROGRAMME
The current version of the programme is available on our website
http://www.ling.helsinki.fi/sky/tapahtumat/complexity/complexity.shtml.
Due to some unfortunate cancellations, we have been obliged to
reorganize the programme to some extent. We are trying to rearrange
the
programme so that only one section would run parallel with the workshop
on August 25. The final programme will appear on the website as
soon as
possible.
SOME RECOMMENDED PREPARATIONS
Please note that there will be no special abstract booklet. If
you wish
to have the abstracts of the presentations on paper, you should
print
them yourself from the file:
http://www.ling.helsinki.fi/sky/tapahtumat/complexity/Abstracts.pdf.
If you have paid the registration fee in advance, please take the
receipt with you. If you plan to pay upon arrival, note that we
can only
accept cash payment in euros.
THE SOCIAL PROGRAM
On Wednesday evening (August 24) starting at 6:30 pm, the University
of
Helsinki will hold a reception for the conference participants.
Light
evening meal will be provided to the participants by the university.
The conference dinner on Thursday evening (August 25) will be served
at
Restaurant Walhalla starting at roughly 7 pm. The restaurant is
located
on the historic grounds of the fortified southern edge of Suomenlinna
isle, one of Unescos World Heritage Sites (http://www.suomenlinna.fi/).
They need some information about menu choices in advance, so please
let
us know whether you want to join the dinner and what you would like
to
choose from the menu (you can find the menu in the end of this message).
Please send your information by replying to this message by Friday
August 19 (but please be careful not to reply to the whole list!).
The
ferry to the island costs roughly 4 euros, to be collected upon
registration.
INFORMATION FOR THOSE GIVING A PRESENTATION
When taking copies of your handouts, please note that the total
number
of participants is around 75, and there are two parallel sessions.
There
is a data projector, an overhead projector and a blackboard in the
lecture rooms. If you need any other equipment, please let us know
in
advance. Please remember that your presentation should not exceed
20
minutes (+10 minutes for discussion). We have allocated 5 minutes
for
participants to move across sections.
OPEN BOOK EXHIBITION
We encourage you to bring copies of yours or your close colleagues'
latest publications. The book exhibition takes place in the exhibition
hall on the fifth floor. Don't be modest and don't hesitate to bring
your publications with you! The book exhibition will give us all
a good
possibility to learn more about current developments in the field.
WEATHER IN FINLAND
The weather is unpredictable in Finland. In August, we may still
have
quite pleasant summer weather, but be also prepared for
relatively low temperatures, rainy days and cool nights!
FURTHER INFORMATION
If you have any questions, please use the address of the organizing
committee, as before. Looking forward to seeing you in August,
Welcome to Helsinki!
