ANNUAL BUSINESS MEETINGS
The annual meeting took place in Helsinki at the Tieteiden talo on February 26. Prof. Elizabeth Couper-Kuhlen (University of Helsinki) gave a guest lecture "'Positionally sensitive
grammar': The case of newsmarks".
The meeting was held on February 20. The guest lecturers were Ilona Herlin and Matti Miestamo (University of Helsinki).
The annual business meeting of the Association was held on February

year the guest lecturers were: Prof. Riho Grünthal
(University of Helsinki), Prof. Jussi Niemi (University of
Joensuu) ja Prof. Anna Mauranen (University of Helsinki).
This year's annual meeting took place in Helsinki at the Tieteiden
talo on Friday Feb. 24. The guest lecturer was Prof. Fred Karlsson,
who talked about the recent results in the research of language

from the University of Tampere.

guest lecturer was Professor Yaron Matras (General Linguistics,
University of Manchester). He gave a talk about "Advances in

The annual business meeting of the Association was held in February
14 2003. Ph.D. Marja Liisa Helasvuo (Dep. of Finnish, University of
Turku) gave a guest lecture with the topic "Mitä interaktionaalinen
kielitiede voi tarjota lingvistiikalle? Esimerkkinä suomen passiivi"
(Interactional linguistics and the Finnish passive).
In 2002 the association celebrated it's 25th anniversary by organizing

In 2001 the guest lecture was given by Professor Michael Tomasello
(Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Leipzig).
DISCUSSIONS AT THE FINNISH CONFERENCE OF LINGUISTICS
Another yearly tradition is that the Association organises discussions
at the Finnish Conference of Linguistics. In 1999 the discussion
was on linguists' job opportunities, in 2000 on the linguistic situation
of Arctic minorities, in 2001 on polyphony of the linguistic research
in Finland, an in 2002 on Time and Language. In 2003, the Association
organized an exhibition around the theme "The world's language
situation and endangered languages. In 2005 the Association participated
in the Night of Sciences. It organized so-called "academic
fifteen minutes" in which Maria Vilkuna and Auli Hakulinen
both gave a talk. The Association also organized a poster exhibition.
The authors of the posters were present to answer possible questions.
