Lexicalist Grammars and Semantics
-
Make a new subdirectory
lkb-cfg-7 for this
exercise. Copy all the files from
~gwilcock/delphin/lkb/src/data/itfs/g7sem into
it. This grammar is very similar to g6morph but
it also includes semantics.
-
Start LKB and load the grammar with the
script
file from your lkb-cfg-7 directory.
Parse these dogs chased the cats.
The Type Hierarchy
-
View the type hierarchy in
types.tdl. There are
some differences from the type hierarchy in Syntactic
Theory Chapter 8, but the basic ideas are the same.
-
The semantic features are collected under SEM as in
Syntactic Theory, but here RESTR is called RELS
(relations). There is an INDEX, but there is no MODE. RELS is
implemented as a difference list.
-
The syntactic features HEAD, SPR and COMPS are not collected
under SYN as in Syntactic Theory. Here they are all
introduced on the type sign.
Grammar Rules
-
The type hierarchy in
types.tdl again has three
rule subtypes unary-rule, binary-rule, and
ternary-rule. As before, they concatenate the
daughters' ORTH strings to make the mother's ORTH string, but
now they also concatenate the daughters' RELS lists to make
the mother's RELS list. How?
-
Again there are two other rule subtypes head-initial
and head-second (here called
binary-head-second). As before, they implement the Head
Feature Principle, but now they also implement the Semantic
Inheritance Principle. How?
-
Which types implement the Semantic Compositionality Principle?
-
Because the Semantic Inheritance Principle and the Semantic
Compositionality Principle are implemented in the type
hierarchy, the grammar rules in
rules.tdl are
exactly the same as in g6morph. No change is
needed for the semantics.
-
Now there is also an implementation of the Head-Modifier Rule.
Lexical Entries
-
View the lexical entries in
lexicon.tdl. The
entries are subtypes of lexeme. As well as ORTH, each
entry specifies a semantic predicate PRED.
-
Add lexical entries for the noun lexemes bus and
boss, and parse these dogs chased the bus and
these dogs chased the boss.
-
Extend the lexicon by adding entries for an intransitive verb,
a transitive verb, and a ditransitive verb. Parse some test
sentences containing these verbs.
