Kurssikuvaus

Esitiedot:

• Knowledge of Java programming
• Knowledge of XML, XML Schema, XHTML (as in Ctl230)
• Basic knowledge of SQL
• Ctl257 is recommended, as previous experience of PostgreSQL, GATE, or WordNet will be helpful.

Tavoitteet:

• The Semantic Web extends the World Wide Web with machine-readable metadata and ontologies to support improved searching and inferencing. Students will learn some of the technologies and languages of the Semantic Web and how they can be used in language technology.

• Semantic Web: XML, metadata and ontologies
• RDF (Resource Description Framework) and RDF Schema
• Processing RDF in Java: Jena open source RDF framework
• Storing RDF in SQL databases: Jena RDQL query language
• Building an ontology: Protégé ontology editor
• Ontology languages: RDFS, DAML+OIL, OWL
• Linguistic ontologies: WordNet, OntoWordNet, FrameNet
