KIT Ctl257, 2004k:
Open Source Methods for Language Technology

Kurssikuvaus

Esitiedot:

  • Basic knowledge of Java programming.
  • Knowledge of XML and XSLT (for example, Ctl230).

Tavoitteet:

  • Students will learn to use a range of open source software tools for language technology projects, together with the associated program development methods.
  • Most of the tools are based on Java and XML, so they can be used on Windows as well as on Linux. As the tools are free, students may decide to install them on their own PCs.
  • The tools and methods can be used either separately or in combination. Complete sets of tools are available as IDEs (Integrated Development Environments). Students will learn how to use IDEs without becoming "locked in" to one manufacturer's IDE.
  • Later in the course, students will learn to use more powerful open source tools and large-scale language technology resources, including PostgreSQL, GATE and WordNet.

Kurssin sisältö:

  • Installing open source software: Xerces and Xalan
  • Reusing published program examples: Java and XSLT
  • Ant, JUnit, CVS: building, testing and sharing programs
  • JBuilder and other IDEs: managing IDE projects with Ant
  • PostgreSQL and other databases: Java, SQL and JDBC
  • GATE: reuseable language technology components
  • WordNet: English lexical semantics database
