Multilingual Translation Machine and Browser

The LINGMACHINE project will

• customise Kielikone's existing Finnish to English MT system for translating EU related administrative documents
• build up a sound core for an English to Finnish MT system
• demonstrate a translation browser for surveying EU related texts for content in English and Finnish.

The project builds on English parser technology developed by Conexor, the generic MT technology of the Kielikone MT system, and the English-to-Finnish transfer experience of University of Helsinki.

The demonstrator is a pair of Finnish-English and English-Finnish translation browsers which allow Finnish and non-Finnish speakers to extract content from English and Finnish administrative documents through raw MT translation online. The functionality can be implemented as a facility within commercial text processing and browsing applications.

The Finnish-to-English demonstrator will exemplify domain specific translation quality attainable at the current state of the art, while the English-to-Finnish demonstrator will cover core grammar and translation correspondences, providing proof of the genericity and reusability of the technology combination.
